FAQs
Who can join the Colby Sailing Team?
The Colby Sailing Team is open to all Colby students, regardless of identity, background, or prior experience. As a club sport, we are committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment where anyone can learn, compete, and enjoy time on the water. Whether you're a seasoned sailor or completely new to the sport, we welcome you to join our team!
I don't have a lot of experience, can I still participate?
Absolutely! No prior sailing experience is necessary to join the Colby Sailing Team. We aim to provide lessons and "Fun Fridays" to help new sailors get comfortable on the water, making the sport accessible and enjoyable for all. Additionally, there are many ways to be involved in the team beyond sailing, including attending meetings, team bonding activities, and supporting club events.
What kinds of boats do you sail?
We are planning on sailing collegiate-spec FJs and 420s, which are both 13-foot, doublehanded boats (sailed by two people). These are the two most common boats used in college sailing across New England, making them ideal for both training and competition.
Do I have to compete to be on the team?
No, you do not have to compete to be on the team. We’re happy to provide opportunities for sailors who just want to get out on the water and enjoy sailing recreationally! With that said, we will have both intramural and competition squads, so those who want to compete at a high level will have the option to do so.
What if I don't have gear?
Safety is our top priority, and it's essential that sailors are properly equipped to be on the water in a variety of conditions. We require all sailors to wear a US Coast Guard Level 70/Type III life jacket, and you may already have suitable gear without realizing it— fleece and synthetic layers work great for sailing! Because we want to eliminate gear as a barrier to participation, part of our fundraising efforts go toward purchasing equipment that can be borrowed during practices and regattas. Many long-term members choose to invest in some of their own gear, such as dinghy sailing boots and spray pants, but these are not required upfront purchases. If you have your own life jacket or sailing gear, please bring them with you!
Why should I join Colby Sailing?
Sailing at the competitive level provides both a mental and physical challenge, making it a unique and rewarding sport. At the same time, it offers a great way to get out in nature and take a break from campus life. Most importantly, we'd argue, joining Colby Sailing means becoming part of a tight-knit team where you’ll make lasting friendships and share unforgettable experiences. Your teammates will be there for you both on and off the water, and will become an essential component of your college experience!
